Dad and I played a game of
catch the rabbit again this evening.
He knows I've been battling some insecurities about being weak and pathetic, so over dinner he readily agreed to be my hare. This time though, I wasn't so successful. He upped the hill route to 6km (from the last 4.5km) and requested an 8min head start. My dad's a fast walker, averaging around 7km/hr most of the time, and this time he said he was going to do some running in between as well, so I was very anxious indeed. He's training for the half marathon this year too, you see, so he's been doing his regular training sessions, with both endurance and speed workouts. So I knew better than to underestimate his strengths.
Mummy yelled a big goodbye when I left the house after giving Dad the 8min headstart. I think she thought it amusing that we were going out to play at such an hour, for it was already nine.
Still, I ran as best I could. I had a few hiccups: I'd left my running shoes over at Andrew's after the run on Sunday (they were drenched). My trail shoes are in the office. And my last pair of trail running shoes... are nowhere to be found! Where, oh where, have I put them? I suspect I've left them at gmp. Darn. Anyway, I panicked and grabbed Mummy's old running shoes. I forgot to re-tape my sore blisters up, so they bothered me for a good kilometre or so. But then, I tuned out and forgot about them.
But Dad was nowhere in sight the whole way.
My music kept pumping. At one point, an ol' familiar tune came on that always reminds me of the butch mincing at Kahuna.
Good shot kiddo, keep going. Perfect or what? And in my mind I kept telling myself I was going to catch him. But everytime I turned the corner, he was not there. I'd underestimated Dad, as it were, anyway.
When I got back, he'd already started his warm-down walk. Bah. He said he'd been waiting a good 2mins or so. Double bah. Man, am I
that slow? My times have been really discouraging indeed. But I guess that's what happens. They don't say 'practice makes perfect' for nothing, I suppose. If you don't practice, you lose it.
And boy, have I lost it.
Never mind. It's only up from here.
